Onion Pakoda | Fritters

Onion Pakoda or Fritters are perfect to have on a rainy day with a hot cup of tea. Not just rainy day you can have it any day as a tea time snack. Onion pakoda is a deep fried snack which mainly consists of onion, chickpeas flour and some spices. They are prepared in most Indian homes. In North India they are called as kanda bhaji or pyaaz ki pakoda and in South India they are called as Ulli vada or Erulli bajji. These are so easy to prepare that even a beginner can try.

If you follow my recipe then you will get perfect crispy pakodas each time. While preparing the mixture do not add any water else the mixture will turn soggy and when you drop them in oil they will absorb more oil. Onion pakoda are usually served green chutney or coconut chutney.

Ingredients
  • Sliced onion 4
  • Red chilli powder 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder ½ tsp
  • crushed coriander seeds 1 tsp
  • Ajwain/ carom seeds ¼ tsp
  • Cumin seeds powder ½ tsp
  • Chopped green chillies 2
  • Chopped ginger 1 tbsp
  • Besan 1 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil fot deep frying
Instructions
  1. Take sliced onion in a bowl. Add salt and let it rest for 30 mins.
  2. Onions would have released water. Add Chilli powder, Turmeric Powder, Crushed coriander, Cumin seeds powder, Ajwain, Chopped green chillies, ginger. Mix well.
  3. Add besan and mix it to form a thick mixture.
  4. Heat oil for deep frying.
  5. When the oil is hot enough drop spoonful of batter into the hot oil.
  6. Deep fry on medium flame until golden brown.
  7. Remove it with a slotted spoon onto a kitchen towel.
  8. Serve it hot along with hot tea.
