Dal Vada | Chattambade | Masala Vada

Dal Vada or chattambade is my all time favorite snack. I just love them and can never stop at just one. I usually stay away from fried food but can never resist this one. It is a perfect tea time snack. This snack always reminds me of my grandmother. She used to make this very often when we were kids. I used to help her. She would make the batter ready and give it to me. I would shape them into vada and fry them in oil. I miss her so much.

I have used chana dal or split bengal gram. You can also use a combination of moong dal and chana dal as well. Please do not add any water while grinding the dal and also make sure to drain the soaked dal to remove any extra moisture else your mixture will be runny and you can’t shape. Also, It will break apart when you drop it in oil. Best part of the this dal vada is it does not absorb much oil.

Ingredients
  • Split bengal gram 1 cup soaked for 4 hours.
  • Finely chopped Onion 1
  • Finely chopped Green chillies 2
  • Salt to taste.
  • Cumin seeds ½ tsp
  • Crushed coriander seeds 1 tsp
  • Ginger 1 inch piece
  • Chopped Coriander leaves ¼ cup
  • Oil for deep frying.
Instructions
  1. In a blender jar add the soaked chana dal or split bengal gram along with ginger and salt.
  2. Pulse it 4 to 5 times to form a coarse mixture.do not add any water. Transfer it to a bowl .
  3. Next, Add the chopped onion, chopped green chillies and mix well.
  4. Finally, Add the Chopped coriander leaves, cumin seeds and crushed coriander seeds and mix well.
  5. Take a small portion in you palm and flatten it to forn a vada.
  6. Drop it in hot oil.
  7. Deep fry until golden brown.
  8. Serve it hot with some ketchup.

Drop it in hot oil.
